Call Specifics
Interns can expect to take in-house call every fifth weeknight, during which time they will assume responsibility of inpatients, new admissions, deliveries, and telephone calls. The interns enjoy the support of upper level (back-up) residents and their attending physicians, as well as the many consultants available to the program. Weekends are split between two interns, meaning each intern has three out of five weekends off and works half of the other two.
A comfortable call room is provided. It is equipped with a computer and Internet services, mini-library, a television, and other amenities, all of which are used only by the Great Plains residents.
During the second and third years, call responsibility is reduced considerably. During the first five weeks of the academic year PGY2s and PGY3s take in-house call with the new residents. The upper-levels each have five to six weeks of back-up call, which is taken mostly from home. This affords the upper-level residents greater flexibility to pursue other opportunities, such as moonlighting, or to just spend time with family or friends. The upper-level on back-up call also comes in on Sunday morning to help the intern on-call round on inpatients.
